EU reiterates commitment to supporting Iraq's stability

BRUSSELS, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas reaffirmed on Sunday the EU's commitment to continuing its support for Iraq in the fields of security, reform, and governance.
Speaking to reporters upon arrival at the fourth EU-Iraq Cooperation Council meeting, Kallas said, "Iraq is a valued partner for the European Union. We cooperate closely on energy, security, and migration." She praised the role of the EU's assistance mission in supporting the Iraqi authorities "in strengthening the rule of law, civilian administration, and security sector reform," adding that this has "helped curb the resurgence of Daesh." Kallas stated that "for the first time, this year's discussions are focusing on public services and economic progress, reflecting the improvement of the situation in Iraq." She added that "the upcoming Iraqi elections represent an important moment, and it is vital that they are peaceful, inclusive, and transparent." She confirmed that "the European Union will participate as an independent observer at Iraq's request." The EU's foreign policy chief stressed that "Iraq's election to the United Nations Human Rights Council is a symbol of progress and an opportunity to build upon," affirming that "the protection of human rights remains a cornerstone of the EU-Iraq relationship." Kallas further explained that "it is vital that the government's reform agenda delivers tangible results for Iraqi citizens and responds to their aspirations for better governance and opportunities." She noted that "Iraq's stability is crucial not only for Iraq itself but also for the European Union and the wider region," reaffirming "the EU's commitment to continue supporting Baghdad on this path." On the resumption of oil exports from the Kurdistan region of Iraq, Kallas said the EU "seeks to diversify its energy sources and avoid dependence on a single supplier," noting that this includes "developing balanced partnerships with various partners." Regarding the EU's election observation mission, she said "the observation team will be on the ground on 11 November," stressing that "the security of the mission is a top priority" and expressing hope that "the elections will contribute to strengthening stability and democracy in the region." Kallas commended the reforms being implemented by the Iraqi government, noting that "cooperation between the two sides has evolved from purely security matters to include energy, digital transformation, and civil reforms." She affirmed that "the EU is striving to support the Iraqi government as much as possible, particularly in addressing migration issues and the situation in Daesh camps." Kallas concluded by reaffirming that "the European Union remains committed to supporting Iraq to ensure its security, stability, and sustainable development for its people." (end) arn.ibi
