MoH: Performing successful surgery of cerebral arteries bypass

KUWAIT, Oct 16 (KUNA) -- The Ministry of Health (MoH) on Thursday announced successful performing of a rare cerebral arteries bypass surgery on a Kuwaiti citizen in his forties after he had a sudden stroke that led to a deep coma.
In a press release, the ministry added this is a national medical achievement showing the advancement of specialized surgical services in Kuwait.
The surgery was performed at Ibn Sina Hospital under the leadership of neurosurgeon Dr. Faisal Albader, noting that the surgery successfully restored blood flow to both the right and left hemispheres of patient's brain. The patient has gradually recovered, and regained his neurological functions, returning to his normal life, it pointed out.
He was suffering from "Moyamoya", a rare disease that causes gradual narrowing of the brain's arteries, thus leading to a severe decrease in blood flow and repeated strokes, it elaborated.
Most cases are registered in Japan, and some Asian countries, and dealing with them is a great challenge, it said.
The statement quoted Albader as saying that such cases were treated outside Kuwait, expressing his pleasure for this medical level inside the homeland.
Al-Bader voiced appreciation to Minister of Health Dr. Ahmad Al-Awadhi and Undersecretary Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Mutairi for their continued support. Albader earned his medical degree from Kuwait University and completed neurosurgical training at Aix-Marseille University in France, becoming Board-Certified. He pursued subspecialty training in Skull Base and Cerebrovascular surgery. (end) ajr.hm
