Iraqi PM orders investigation into Baghdad council candidate assassination

BAGHDAD, Oct 15 (KUNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Al-Sudani on Wednesday ordered an investigation into the assassination of Baghdad Provincial Council member and parliamentary candidate Safaa Al-Hijazi, who was killed when an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle late Tuesday in northern Baghdad.
Baghdad Operations Command said in a statement that the explosion occurred in Al-Dhubbat neighborhood within Tarmiyah District, resulting in the death of Al-Hijazi and injuries to four others who were accompanying him at the time of the incident.
The statement added that, in accordance with the Prime Minister's directives, a joint criminal and technical task force and a high-level investigative committee were formed under the supervision of the Baghdad Operations Commander to determine the circumstances and motives behind the attack.
Member of Parliament Aisha Al-Masari from Al-Siyada Alliance condemned the assassination, describing it as a dangerous escalation that threatens Baghdad's stability and marks the return of targeted killings after a period of security calm experienced by Iraqis.
Al-Masari urged security and governmental authorities to take full responsibility in identifying and prosecuting those involved in the crime, as Al-Siyada Alliance led by politician Khamis Al-Khanjar prepares for the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 11.
The assassination comes amid heightened political activity across Iraq ahead of the upcoming elections, with security authorities intensifying measures to prevent any acts that could undermine electoral stability and public confidence in the democratic process. (end) ahh.ahm
