Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit endorses Gaza ceasefire agreement
CAIRO, Oct 13 (KUNA) -- The Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit concluded Monday evening with the endorsement of the agreement to end the Gaza war, which was reached on October 9, through Egyptian, Qatari, Turkish, and American mediation.
In a statement the Egyptian presidency said that the summit, co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdelfattah Al-Sisi and US President Donald Trump, underlined the importance of international cooperation to provide all means to implement Gaza peace agreement's terms.
This includes a comprehensive cessation of the war in Gaza, the completion of the exchange of hostages and captives, the Israeli withdrawal, and the delivery of humanitarian and relief aid into the Gaza Strip, it added.
The summit witnessed the signing ceremony of a joint document by the leaders of the mediating countries in support of the peace agreement.
The conferees commended US President efforts to end the war through his proposed plan, as well as the pivotal role of Egypt, Qatar and Turkiye in mediating the deal.
The participating leaders valued Egypt's role in leading and coordinating humanitarian efforts since the outbreak of the crisis and its mediation role, leading up to the Sharm El-Sheikh agreement. They commended the Egyptian efforts in convening the Summit.
There was also a strong emphasis on the need to commence consultations on the means and mechanisms to implement the upcoming phases of President Trump's settlement plan, starting with issues related to governance and providing security, the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, and culminating in the political track for settlement.
In the statement, Egypt extended its appreciation to the leaders who participated in the summit and welcomes the high-level international participation, which clearly reflected global support for efforts to end the war.
Egypt vowed to continue cooperation with its regional and international partners to close this painful chapter in the history of the Middle East and the world, affirming that it would spare no effort to preserve the new prospect of peace.
The statement stressed Egypt would remain a source of support for the Palestinian people and continue to back their resilience and their legitimate, inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination, and their right to live in safety and peace, like all other peoples of the world, in an independent state living side-by-side with Israel, on their land in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, under their legitimate leadership and along the June 4, 1967 borders, in accordance with international law and relevant resolutions of international legitimacy.
The statement added that Egypt looked forward to achieving peace and would cooperate with all parties to build a Middle East free of conflicts, a Middle East built on justice, equality of rights, good neighborliness, and peaceful coexistence among all its peoples without exception.
The Sharm el-Sheikh Summit was held based on an Egyptian-American initiative to consolidate the peace process in the Middle East by ending the war in Gaza and reaching a political settlement for the Palestinian issue.
The summit was attended by heads of state and government from Kuwait, Jordan, Qatar, Bahrain, Turkey, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, France, Cyprus, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Greece, Armenia, Hungary, Pakistan, Canada, Norway, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, the Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Japan, the Netherlands, Paraguay, and India, in addition to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, the President of the European Council, the President of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA), and the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The Kuwaiti delegation to the summit was headed by Representative of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. (pick up previous)
