RAMALLAH, Sept 28 (KUNA) -- The so-called 'National Security' committee in the Israeli occupation's parliament (Knesset) approved a bill regarding the execution of Palestinian prisoners, in preparation for presenting it to the General Assembly for a first reading.
Israeli occupation media reported that the committee held a session on Sunday to discuss the bill, "despite the opposition" of the occupation's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On the other hand, The Palestinian Prisoners Club and the Commission of Detainees Affairs said that the ratification of the law to execute prisoners once again confirms that the occupation acts as if it is a state above the law and beyond accountability.
The two organizations said in a joint statement that the draft law "is no longer a surprise in light of the unprecedented brutality practiced by the occupation, despite the clear position of international law which criminalizes the death penalty."
The statement added that the law consolidates the crime of execution to a repressive legislative system that has targeted Palestinians for decades, especially against prisoners and detainees.
The draft law was previously proposed in 2022, when extremist occupation government minister Itamar Ben-Gvir reintroduced it with a set of amendments, until the Knesset approved it in 2023, leading up to today for the first reading in preparation for its approval by a special committee. (end)
