Arab negotiators agree "unified stance" ahead of UN COP30 summit

CAIRO, Sept 25 (KUNA) -- A group of Arab negotiators has agreed on a "unified stance" after a routine gathering in the Egyptian capital, ahead of the United Nations' COP30 climate summit slated for November in Brazil's rainforest city of Belem.
Describing the talks as "fruitful," Kuwait Environment Public Authority's Air Quality Monitoring Department chief Engineer Sheriff Al-Khayat said that the gathering has met its objective since it yielded a "unified Arab stance" ahead of the UN Climate summit, while the matters due to be addressed in the high-level UN gathering in Brazil were also discussed, he added.
As part of efforts to safeguard the best interests of the wider Arab region, the negotiators identified any possible "red lines" that could potentially be detrimental to Arab interests, he underlined, saying that the group has also finalized its "negotiation plans" ahead of a regional gathering in Kuwait next month over "carbon market mechanisms," he said.
The regional gathering slated for mid-October in Kuwait allows Arab states the chance to demonstrate their commitment towards cutting global greenhouse gas emissions, which is among the pillars of the Paris climate agreement, the official said, citing Kuwait's prominent role in backing global efforts to fight climate change.
