Japan, Palestine FMs reaffirm two-state solution

TOKYO, Sept 19 (KUNA) -- Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya and his Palestinian counterpart Varsen Aghabekian agreed to work together toward advancing the Middle East peace process and realizing a two-state solution.
During their 25-minute phone talks, Iwaya emphasized Tokyo's unwavering support for a two-state solution, Japan's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday. He also voiced deep concern over the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the West Bank, including Israel's expanding ground operations in Gaza City, which he warned could undermine the basis of such a settlement.
Japan's top diplomat further stressed the importance of improving the humanitarian situation, achieving a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages, according to the ministry.
In addition, Iwaya praised the Palestinian Authority' reform efforts and commitment to the peace process, highlighting the need for tangible progress.
He pledged Japan's continued support for Palestinian state-building through initiatives such as the Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development, in coordination with relevant countries and organizations.
For her part, Aghabekian expressed appreciation for Japan's principled stance and long-standing support for Palestine, while briefing Iwaya on the current situation surrounding Palestine and ongoing PA reforms. (end) mk.gb
