ISLAMABAD, Sept 4 (KUNA) -- The death toll from the recent earthquake in Afghanistan climbed to 2,205 on Thursday, while 3,640 sustained injuries as rescue operation continues in the mountainous region, said official.
Deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Hamdullah Fitrat in a statement to media confirmed that hundreds of bodies have so far been recovered from the rubble of destroyed homes during search and rescue operations in Mazar Dara area of Nurgal district, Diva-Gul Dara area of Chawkay district and Chapadara area of Manogai district of eastern Kunar province. He confirmed that the total number of deaths has reached 2,205, and 3,640 injured. He further said that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing, and tents have been set up for people in various areas.
Earlier, the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned that local healthcare services were "under immense strain." The earthquake of 6.0 magnitude struck Afghanistan on Sunday, affecting Kunar, Laghman, Nangarhar, Nuristan and Panjshir provinces with Kunar being the worst hit. (end)
