Arab League extraordinary session on occupation crimes in Gaza
CAIRO, Aug 10 (KUNA) -- The extraordinary session of the Arab League at the level of permanent delegates, chaired by Jordan, kicked off on Sunday to discuss ways to confront the crimes of the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip.
In his opening remarks, Jordan's Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Amjad Al-Adhayleh, stressed that the Israeli occupation government's announcement of its intention to reoccupy the Gaza Strip and fully control it represents a dangerous escalation and an illegal aggression.
The announcement was met with widespread rejection and condemnation from the international community, as it reinforces a policy of aggression and arrogance, violates all international legitimacy resolutions, and constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, amid the international community's inability to deter this aggression, he added.
He also pointed to the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which affirmed the illegality of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the need to end it immediately, as it violates international law and the Palestinian people's right to self-determination.
In turn, the Palestinian representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, emphasized that the Israeli occupation government's declaration of complete control over Gaza reveals its intention to consolidate colonialism and displace the Palestinian people from their land.
He noted that Israel's aggressive decision reflects a clear intention to deepen and entrench the occupation, disregarding all international resolutions and demands to end it, including the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice on July 19, 2024.
He also called for protection for the Palestinian people, not as a plea, nor as a favor, but as a right mandated by international law and the Charter of the United Nations, which was established to maintain security and peace in the world and stipulated that membership requires peace-loving countries. He held the international community responsible for failing a people subjected to genocide, starvation, and ethnic cleansing.
The emergency session is being held at the request of Palestine and with the support of the Arab states, in light of the Israeli occupation's decision to reoccupy the Gaza Strip and "take full control" of it, which will result in the forced displacement of the Palestinian people inside and outside the Gaza Strip, in addition to putting an end to the humanitarian catastrophe sweeping the lives of citizens in the Strip.
