Arab League condemns attempt to form illegitimate gov't in Nyala, Sudan

CAIRO, July 27 (KUNA) -- The Arab League condemned on Sunday the announcement by a Sudanese coalition linked to the Rapid Support Forces to form a government in the city of Nyala, southwestern Sudan, saying it exacerbates the conflict and leads to the fragmentation of the state.
The league stated in a press release that this step, along with appointing governors for a number of regions, constitutes a "blatant challenge" to the will of the Sudanese people, warning of the disintegration of Sudan if hostilities continue.
The league reaffirmed its rejection of any parallel governments forming outside the legal framework of Sudan, condemning what it described as "persistence in plans to weaken state institutions and to introduce chaos in an attempt to divide Sudan into warring cantons." It stressed the need for full respect for international legitimacy decisions, end to hostilities according to the Jeddah Agreement, and for aid corridors to be opened to facilitate aid deliveries, otherwise, this step will have grave consequences on peace, stability, and regional security.
The Arab League pointed to a statement by the Security Council issued on March 5th, which rejected the establishment of a parallel governing authority in Sudan, as it would lead to the exacerbation of the ongoing conflict, fragmentation of the country, and worsening of the dire humanitarian situation.
