China reports 3,000+ Chikungunya infections

BEIJING, July 23 (KUNA) -- The Chinese health authorities said Wednesday that 3,195 cases of infection with Chikungunya virus have been lab-confirmed in Foshan city, Guangdong Province, central China, since July 8.
With 2,934 cases, Shunde district accounted for the majority of infections recorded in the city until yesterday, CCTV reported, citing statistics of China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The city put its hospital on alert for the epidemic and set aside 3,600 beds for virus-hit patients.
The virus is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission, the CDC said, affirming that the epidemic is preventable and curable.
The symptoms of disease include high fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, skin rash and severe fatigue. (end) slg.gb
