LONDON, July 17 (KUNA) -- The British government announced on Thursday its decision to lower the voting age from 18 to 16, marking one of the most significant electoral reforms in recent history.
A statement by the British government said that the decision will not come into effect until the next general election, scheduled for mid-2029.
The decision is considered the biggest reform to UK's electoral system since 1969, when the voting age was lowered to 18 from 21.
The British government's plan to lower the voting age would aim to ensure that more people have the opportunity to engage in UK democracy.
Reducing the voting age to 16 was one of UK's Prime Minister Keir Starmer's campaign promises last year. (end)
