PARIS, June 22 (KUNA) -- French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday that the only way to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East is through dialogue and a clear commitment by Iran to abandon the development of nuclear weapons.
Macron said on X platform that this came during phone calls he had with a number of GCC leaders, including Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Sultan of Oman, President of the United Arab Emirates and Amir of Qatar, within the framework of coordination and consultation on the current regional situation.
He assured them that the continued escalation could lead to serious repercussions that threaten the security of the entire region.
In a related context, Macron renewed during a call with the Iranian president his demand for the immediate release of French citizens detained in Iran Cأ©cile Kohler and Jacques Paris.
In the wake of the overnight strikes, he also called for de-escalation, stressing the importance of Iran exercising maximum restraint to allow a return to the diplomatic track and avoid further tension. (end)
