WASHINGTON, March 21 (KUNA) -- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Friday the designation of Cristina Elisabet Fernandez de Kirchner - the former president of Argentina, and Julio Miguel De Vido - the former minister of planning, "for their involvement in significant corruption" during their time in public office.
This action renders both persons and their immediate family members generally ineligible for entry into the United States, Secretary Rubio said in a press release.
They orchestrated bribery schemes related to public works contracts, stealing millions of dollars from the Argentine government.
Courts have convicted these officials, damaging confidence in Argentina's future.
The US is committed to promoting accountability for corruption globally, with sanctions imposed under law for officials involved in corruption or gross human rights abuses.
Cristina Fern?ndez de Kirchner, president from 2007 to 2015, was sentenced to six years for administrative fraud in late 2022, barring her from public office for life. (end)
