Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry meets Mauritian counterpart Mohamed Salem
CAIRO, Jan 24 (KUNA) - Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry held talks in Cairo Wednesday with visiting Mauritian counterpart Mohamed Salem Ould Merzouk on boosting bilateral ties and cooperation to address regional and African challenges.
At the meeting, both sides reviewed diverse areas of collaboration between the two nations, with special emphasis on training, transportation, education, counter-terrorism, and the exchange of international endorsements between the two countries, said Director of the Public Diplomacy Department of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid in a press statement.
"They also agreed to convene the Joint Committee chaired by the foreign ministers of both countries at the earliest opportunity, in line with the agreement reached by the two presidents in June 2023," he pointed out.
Ambassador Abu Zaid added that Minister Shoukry expressed eagerness to enhance Egypt's cooperation with the Mauritanian presidency of the African Union (AU) within the framework of Egypt President's leadership of the steering committee of the New Partnership for Africa's Development Agency (NEPAD). This also comes in light of Egypt President's leadership in the file of post-conflict reconstruction and development in Africa.
The meeting also witnessed an exchange of views on numerous important and vital issues on the African, regional, and international stages.
These included the situation in Gaza, developments in Sudan and Somalia, the security of the Red Sea, and the political and security situation in the African Sahel region.
Both countries emphasized their agreement on exerting concerted efforts to find effective solutions to these issues, aiming to preserve the stability of both the African continent and the Middle East.

Additionally, the Mauritanian Foreign Minister emphasized the special fraternal relationship that historically binds Egypt and Mauritania, which is reflected in the frequent mutual visits and continuous consultations regarding shared challenges, demonstrating solidarity in facing these common issues.
