Saudi Arabia, US welcome Sudan dialogue

RIYADH, May 6 (KUNA) -- Saudi Arabia and the US welcomed the start of initial talks between representatives of the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah on Saturday.
They urged both parties to live up to responsibility towards the Sudanese people, seriously engage in ceasefire talks, and end the conflict in a bid to spare the Sudanese people more sufferings and ensure humanitarian aid to affected areas, according to a joint statement released by the kingdom's official news agency.
Riyadh and Washington also commended the efforts of the countries and organizations that supported these talks, including the Quad countries (Saudi Arabia, UAE, the UK, and the US), the Arab League) and Trilateral Mechanism partners, it said.
Both sides also called for carrying on coordinated international efforts for supporting expanded negotiations involving all Sudanese parties, according to the statement.
The Sudanese army said on Friday evening that it would dispatch negotiators to Jeddah for ceasefire talks. (end) mdm.mt
