Chelsea win first FIFA Club World Cup in extra-time defeat of Palmeiras

KUWAIT, Feb 12 (KUNA) -- European champions Chelsea won their first-ever FIFA Club World Cup title on Saturday, beating Brazil's Palmeiras, 2-1, in extra time at Abu Dhabi's Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium.
The Blues' Belgian international Romelu Lukaku's 55th minute opener in the second half was cancelled by Raphael Veiga - the Brazilian attacking midfielder levelling for his side some 10 minutes later.
The result took the game into two extra time halves, with the English side getting the better of the South American champions through German midfielder Kai Havertz in the 117th minute.
The English side, who won the 2021 UEFA Champions League, previously missed the opportunity to win the world championship back in 2012 after a defeat to another Brazilian side, two-time winners Corinthians.
African champions Al-Ahli and Asian title-holders Al-Hilal both came third and fourth, respectively. (end) sad.sd
