TUNIS, Feb 6 (KUNA) -- Senegal clinched their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations in a 4-2 penalty shootout win over seven-time winners Egypt after a goalless original time draw at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde on Sunday.
Sadio Mane of English outfit Liverpool scored the winning goal for the Lions of Teranga as his Premier League club team mate and top scorer, Mohamed Salah, was left ruing his side's chances.
Mane, who also took home the player of the tournament award, came close to scoring in the first half only for his shot to be impeded by Gabaski, who's bright efforts in the tournament saw him make his fifth penalty save.
Mohamed Abdelmonem, who was second to shoot for Egypt, hit the crossbar while Mohanad Lasheen's spot kick was saved by Edouard Mendy, who won the golden gloves honour.
Senegal's title comes after they were runners-up in the last edition of the tournament in a defeat to Algeria.
The two sides will meet again after being drawn against eachother in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. (end)
