His Highness the Amir honors a winner of Kuwait's Grand Quran Recitation and Memorization Contest 2006

KUWAIT, Feb 15 (KUNA) -- The State of Kuwait's 21st Grand Quran Recitation and Memorization Contest continues its successful legacy, which began in 1997 under the auspices of the Kuwaiti leadership.
The current edition of the competition, held under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, will have 1,729 competitors representing 40 public and private entities.
According to statistics released by Kuwait Awqaf Public Foundation, around 27,000 individuals have reached the final stages of the competition with around 6,220 participants winning in the last 20 incarnations of the contests.
The Quran competition saw the participation of male and female competitors from different age groups. People with special needs were also allowed to partake in the contest.
Last year, a committee was established to evaluate participation from citizens abroad with the UK being chosen as the starting point. There are plans to add more countries in the future. (end)
