Kuwaiti Amiri amnesty frees 1,059 convicts

KUWAIT, July 1 (KUNA) -- His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah has issued an Amiri decree to pardon the remaining sentences of 1,059 convicts, Kuwait's Ministry of Interior said on Thursday.
A ceremony to mark the announcement was attended by a number of MoI officials including; Assistant Undersecretary for Correctional Facilities and Sentences Affairs Major General Anwar Al-Yaseen, Head of the General Administration for Sentences, Maj. Gen. Majed Al-Majed, Head of the Security Media Department and MoI official spokesperson Brigadier General Mohammad al-Saber and acting Director General for the General Directorate for Correctional Facilities, Colonel Adel Al-Ibrahim.
"Today we celebrate the release of a number of those included in the Amiri amnesty, men and women," Maj. Gen. Al-Yaseen said in a speech to commemorate the event. He added that this year's amnesty differs than a year ago, as juveniles are included.
A committee tasked with the matter has raised a list containing the names of those pardoned to the ministers of interior and justice for their verification, he noted. Al-Yaseen also urged those receiving the amnesty to be "good citizens." For his part, Brig. Gen. Al-Saber Al-Saber expressed gratitude to His Highness the Amir, reminding those pardoned to make use of the gracious Amiri initiative, which he said "reflects the noble nature of Kuwait and its leadership."
