Britain, US urged Syrian regime's backers to stop violence on civilians

LONDON, March 4 (KUNA) -- Britain and the US Sunday urged backers of the Syrian regime to stop acts of violence and work on protecting innocent civilians.
British Prime Minister Theresa May spoke with US President Donald Trump over the phone and discussed the appalling humanitarian situation in Eastern Ghouta, and agreed that overwhelming responsibility for the "heart-breaking human suffering" was upon the Syrian regime and Russia.
The two leaders said Russia and other parties with influence over the Syrian regime must act now to cease their campaign of violence and to protect civilians.
May and Trump agreed that the situation in Eastern Ghouta was "a humanitarian catastrophe." UN Security Council had unanimously adopted resolution 2401 late last month, which established a 30-day truce to provide humanitarian aid delivery.
Meanwhile, May raised deep concern at Trumpآ’s announcement on steel and aluminium tariffs, noting that multilateral action was the only way to resolve the problem of global overcapacity in all parties' interests. (end) mrn.bs
