Relentless diplomacy secured 30-day truce in Syria - Kuwait

NEW YORK, Feb 24 (KUNA) -- Kuwait said Saturday there were relentless diplomatic efforts that led to UN Security Council's (UNSC) unanimous adoption of resolution 2401 for a 30-day truce in Syria to allow delivery of humanitarian aid.
Mansour Al-Otaibi, Kuwait permanent representative to the UN, noted diplomatic efforts aimed at securing a text to be approved by all 15 UNSC members.
The resolution was co-sponsored by Kuwait and Sweden. Kuwait is holding the UNSC presidency for February.
Voting had been postponed more than once to allow last-minute consultations among UNSC members. A vote was scheduled for Friday but was postponed after Russia proposed some amendments to the draft resolution.
The UN announced two days ago that air strikes on Eastern Ghouta in Syria killed around 400 people and injury of over 1,000 others.
The Syrian regime forces have been pounding opposition-held Eastern Ghouta, although the area was within the de-escalation zones. (end) asf.bs
