Russia military says negotiations for halt in E. Ghouta failed

MOSCOW, Feb 21 (KUNA) -- The negotiating process for a peaceful settlement in Eastern Ghouta has failed, Russian military commander quoted as saying on Wednesday.
Russian news agency (RIA Novosti) quoted Major-General Yuri Yevtushenko, who represent the military commander of the Russian Air Force Al-Hamim base in Syria, as saying in a briefing.
Yevtushenko added that armed groups in Eastern Al-Ghouta did not respond to Russian mediation and calls for a ceasefire, which hindered evacuation process to those injured.
The Russian commander also described the situation in Eastern Al-Ghouta as "catastrophic" blaming armed groups for not allowing civilians to depart the city.
Earlier, Russia called on the UN security council to hold an emergency meeting regarding the current developments in Al-Ghouta.
Also earlier, the representative of the UN Secretary General, Stefan Dujarrik said that over a hundred people had died of shelling in Eastern Al-Ghouta since the past two days. (end) as.mb
