Kuwait calls for new methods to help Iraq honor invasion-related commitments

NEW YORK, Feb 20 (KUNA) -- Kuwait on Tuesday called for adopting new methods to make sure Iraq honored its "obligations" towards Kuwait, specifically missing Kuwaitis and properties including the national archive.
"I call anew for exerting more effort and adopt new methods in dealing with obligations towards Kuwait in order to achieve progress," Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah said before a UN Security Council session on Iraq.
Kuwait's national archive "is a historic wealth" for the State of Kuwait in line with UNSC resolution 2013 (2017), said Sheikh Sabah, whose country holds the February presidency of the Council.
"I called for further efforts to end the suffering of the families of the (Kuwaiti) prisoners and missing, which has been ongoing for more than 27 years," he added.
Sheikh Sabah hoped "cooperation with Iraq continues with the same spirit, out of our keenness to completing remaining obligations" within the tripartite committee and relevant UNSC resolutions "in order to achieve major and concrete results." He underlined Kuwait's full cooperation with the UN assistance mission in Iraq (UNAMI) to addressing this issue.
Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait for seven months in 1990-91. During the occupation, Iraqi forces rounded up hundreds of Kuwaiti citizens. Many of them were released and many others were found buried in Iraq. Hundreds more are still unaccounted for.
During the occupation, the Iraqis also stole Kuwait's national archive, in addition to destroying public and private properties. Iraqi forces torhced over 700 oil wells shortly before they were rejected by a US-led coalition. (end) asf.bs
