Clashes kill 20 policemen in W. Afghanistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 20 (KUNA) -- At least 20 policemen were killed and several others wounded in two separate clashes with Taliban rebels in Afghanistanآ’s western Farah province on Tuesday, said officials.
A member of the Afghan provincial council member, Dadullah Qanai, told media that Taliban rebels stormed a police post in the Shamalgah area of the province, killing at least five policemen and injuring four others. The post was overrun by the Taliban but Afghan forces recaptured it later, while the rebels also seized weapons and ammunition from the post and torched a vehicle.
Moreover, the Taliban stormed three security posts in Farahrod Bazaar in Bala Bolok district, killing at least 15 policemen and kidnapping four others. The clashes there resulted in several casualties but the exact number is unknown. The fighters also seized all ammunition from the forces and killed 26 security peronnel in the attack, according to Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi.
The clashes come at a time when Taliban rebels have paced up their attacks across Afghanistan. (end) sbk.nam
