UN warns of Syrian crisis immense pressure on Lebanon

BEIRUT, Feb 16 (KUNA) -- UN Development Program (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner warned on Friday against immense pressure caused by the Syrian crisis on the social services, infrastructure and jobs in Lebanon.
Steiner, in a statement at conclusion of his visit to Lebanon, said crisis in neighboring Syria has been ongoing for seven years and Lebanon has been the most affected by one of the worst humanitarian disasters in modern time.
"Despite all that, it (Lebanon) is showing exceptional commitment and sympathy with the displaced by the war in Syria," he said.
Steiner said UNDP was committed to helping the Lebanese government and local hosting communities to maintain stability nationwide.
The statement said Steiner and the Lebanese officials discussed challenges facing the nation since outbreak of the crisis in Syria.
It said all the Syrian refugees wished to returned to their homes but it was impossible now. Therefore, it added, Lebanon should be helped to offer services for hunders of thousands of Syrians.
Steiner also visited host communities and get acqauinted with needs of the Syrian refugees first hand. (end) ayb.bs
