FBI says failed to act on tip of suspected Florida school shooter

WASHINGTON, Feb 16 (KUNA) -- A month before 17 students were killed at a Parkland, Florida high school the FBI said it received a warning that the now suspect, Nikolas Cruz, 19, might carry out such and attack but investigators failed to act on it.
The tipster was "a person close to Nikolas Cruz" and should have been investigated as a "potential threat to life, these protocols were not followed," said a statement from the FBI.
The FBI said the caller provided information about "Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting "The information was not provided to the Miami Field Office, and no further investigation was conducted at that time," it added.
President Donald Trump is expected to arrive in Florida later today "to meet with some of the bravest people on earth - but people whose lives have been totally shattered. Am also working with Congress on many fronts," he tweeted.
This is the third that a mass shooter in Florida has received attention from the bureau before an attack was carried out. The FBI had previously investigated a gunman who killed 49 at the Pulse nightclub. Separately, a man who killed five at the Fort Lauderdale airport had previously walked into an FBI office making bizarre statements.
"We are still investigating the facts," Christopher A. Wray, the FBI director, said in the statement. "I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter, as well as reviewing our processes for responding to information that we receive from the public." (end) ak.bs
