UN envoy to Yemen to step down in February

NEW YORK, Jan 23 (KUNA) -- The United Nations envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed has told the UN Secretary-General that he intends to step down from his post at the end of his term in February.
The special envoy said he thanks UN chief Antonio Guterres for backing efforts to reach a political settlement that aims to end the conflict in Yemen.
"In this moment, his thoughts go first to the Yemeni people who are worn out by this conflict and are enduring one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in the world," read a statement by Ahmed's office.
Ahmed added, he "remains committed to pursue through diplomacy an end to the violence and a political solution that meets the legitimate aspirations of the Yemeni people, until a successor is named." (end) asf.sd
