By Redha Sardar ANKARA, Dec 15 (KUNA) -- Working in one Ankara's oldest neighborhoods, Nevzat Ozbay manages to highlight various political causes, namely the Palestinian cause, through his passion for carpentry.
"My work mainly focuses on the plight of the Palestinian people and I use my talent in carpentry to convey the stories of those people," Ozbay told KUNA.
Ozbay said that his work had more of a personal take on the situation in Palestine and especially in the Gaza Strip where many of his friends there were killed while others are still imprisoned by Israel.
In reaction to the Israeli aggressions and atrocities, Ozbay worked on a piece entitled the "temple".
The temple basically criticizes the Israelis' claim of being Jewish which is far away from the truth, said the Ozbay who views their actions as anti-Jewish and anti-human rights.
Other than the Palestinian cause, Ozbay had several other pieces which criticized authoritarian regimes' manipulation of the media and other outlets.
The "screams of the oppressed" is one of my pieces that speaks out against tyranny, he said, adding that he made several other carpentry pieces that stands against all kinds of injustices and crimes against humanity.
Regarding the wood material, Ozbay said that he used more than 40 types of woods to create his work which might sell for about USD 90 or a staggering USD 12,000 depending on the quality of the wood and art process.
The Turkish carpenter/artist said that he took part in some 14 international events to showcase his pieces, affirming that art should not be bounded by borders.
On his efforts to pass on his experience, Ozbay said that he would usually teach 15 students on a weekly-basis, indicating that he was eager teach his art to future generations. (end) rs.gta
