US makes "encouraging progress" to fix Iran nuclear deal

WASHINGTON, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- The White House affirmed Tuesday that the US Administration continues to make "encouraging progress with Congress to fix the US-Iran deal and address long-term proliferation issues." Addressing reports that the congressional leaders have no plans to re-impose sanctions on Iran by the deadline of December that President Donald Trump initiated in October, White House Spokesperson Sarah Sanders said "there was actually no deadline to act by this week as the administration did not ask that Congress to introduce legislation to re-impose JCPOA-related sanctions." Trump announced in October that he would de-certify the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and seek changes in it through the US Congress and US allies.
If suitable amendments to the agreement are not achieved by the US Congress and allies, the deal will be "terminated," he warned.
The State Department announced that Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon will lead the U.S. delegation to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) Joint Commission meeting in Vienna on Wednesday.
It said in a statement that "under the terms of the JCPOA, the Joint Commission is responsible for overseeing the implementation" of the deal. (end) si.gb
