New EU assistance programme to improve health services in Libya

BRUSSELS, Dec 12 (KUNA) -- The European Commission adopted Tuesday a new 10.9 million euro (USD 12.7 million) health programme to support Libyan people to get better access to healthcare.
"The European Union stands by the Libyan population in these challenging times. This new assistance shows our commitment to alleviate the suffering of the Libyan population by improving healthcare, an essential public good", commented Johannes Hahn, EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy, in a press statement.
The programmes will include assistance to maternal and newborn health, blood transfusion services and mental health.
The EU currently has a package of 120 million euro (USD 140 million) for support to Libya in 37 projects across six sectors: civil society; governance; health; youth and education; migration and support to the political process, noted the statement. (end) nk.gta
