TUNIS, Dec 9 (KUNA) -- A large audience, including literary critics and dramatists, at Al-Hamra theater warmly applauded "The Sailor's Diary," a Kuwaiti melodrama starring Mishari Mejbel.
The 30-minute work, offered by Arabian Gulf Theater troupe as part of the Carthage Theater Days festival, portrayed the various aspects of the traditional daily life of a Kuwaiti sailor.
The eloquent text, featuring rich lyrics and folklore, was written by Mohammad Al-Fayez, a celebrated poet, in 1964; it was performed as an operetta in 1979, Youssef Al-Surayye', director of the work, said on Saturday.
"The text proved to be of great appeal, so I extracted three diaries and turned them into a monodrama," Al-Surayye' noted in statements to KUNA.
He added that Mejbel, as an eminent and talented actor, was able to perform this work of art in an impressive way.
"Thanks to his musical voice and harmonic motions, Mejbel was able to take the audience back to 1948 to show them the way of life a traditional sailor used to lead, as well as the character's joys, difficulties and relationship with the sea," he went on.
On the ongoing festival, Al-Surayye' expressed joy for taking part in this international event, saying that it provides a chance for his troupe to share experience with creative theatrical schools from around the globe.
Meanwhile, Kuwait Ambassador to Tunisia Ali Al-Dhefeeri expressed admiration for Mejbel's wonderful poetic performance.
"In this work, the poet and the actor were able to revive the Kuwaiti maritime heritage," he told KUNA.
Al-Dhefeeri added that the Tunisian lovers of theater are eager to see and learn more about Kuwaiti plays and folklore.
The 19th edition of Carthage Theater Days opened on Friday evening. (end) ksj.gb
