US legislators approve bill to avoid gov't shutdown

WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (KUNA) -- The US House of Representatives and the Senate late Thursday passed a two-week funding bill in hopes of avoiding a partial government shutdown.
The House voted 235 to 193 while the Senate voted 81-40 to pass the bill just one day before the deadline of 12:01 am. Saturday.
The bill will now be sent to President Donald Trump who is expected to sign it.
Six Republicans, seven Democrats and Independent Bernie Sanders voted against the measure.
Lawmakers will now work to finalize a bill before the December 22 deadline, three days before the Christmas holiday. Today's legislation came after Congress leaders of both parties met with Trump at the White House to discuss the long-term budget. (end) ak.gb
