US Senate votes to confirm Neilsen as Secretary of Homeland Security

WASHINGTON, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- US Senate on Tuesday confirmed security expert Kirstjen Nielsen as the Secretary of Homeland Security.
In a vote of 62-39, ten Senate Democrats and one Independent voted with Republicans to confirm Kirstjen Nielsen to head the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In response to the confirmation, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Elaine Duke described Neilsen as "a homeland security expert with a deep understanding of the issues facing the Department and is well-positioned to lead us into the future." Since July, Nielsen served as White House deputy chief of staff behind chief of staff John Kelly, who led DHS before he became President Donald Trump's chief of staff.
Neilsen is expected to be sworn-in to her post in the coming days. (end) hy.ibi
