Al-Sisi, Trump discuss US intention to move embassy to Jerusalem

CAIRO, Dec 5 (KUNA) -- Egyptian President Abdelfatah Al-Sisi on Tuesday received a telephone call from his US counterpart Donald Trump on Washington's intention to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Al-Sisi confirmed Egypt's firm position on maintaining the legal status quo of Jerusalem within the framework of the international references and the relevant UN resolutions, Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Radhi said in a statement.
He noted that Al-Sisi stressed the necessity of avoiding complicating the position in the Middle East region through taking measures aiming to undermine opportunities for peace in the region.
Meanwhile, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri phoned his French counterpart Jean-Louis Le Drian on Tuesday and reviewed assessment of an expected announcement by the US administration on the status of Jerusalem.
During the call, the two ministers expressed their hope that the US administration would not rush into making such a decision as it will lead to dangerous possible repercussions for regional position and the future of the peace process, Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
They also focused on the latest developments on relations between the two countries in light of the distinguished ties and the successful visit paid by Al-Sisi to France last month, it added.
The two ministers further dealt with means of coordination regarding a meeting of the international contact group on Lebanon due in Paris on December 8.
Shoukri stated Egypt hopes that the participants would make a success of the climate change summit due on December 12, lauding the French pioneering role towards international issues of common concern, the statement concluded. (end) esm.hm
