Indian security personnel, six militants killed in Kashmir encounter

NEW DELHI, Nov 18 (KUNA) -- One Indian Air Force personnel and at least six militants, including nephew of Mumbai attack mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and five Lashkar-e-Taiba elements, were killed on Saturday in an encounter in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir in North India.
Quoting the Director General of Police in Indian-administered side of Jammu and Kashmir S P Vaid, the Asian News International said that the forces managed to eliminate the militants in Hajin area of Bandipora district following a security operation launched after receiving specific intelligence inputs about the presence of militants.
The Indian forces also recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from the slain militants.
The state authorities suspended internet connection in Hajin area soon after the encounter broke out.
The authorities on Friday had imposed curfew-like restrictions in many parts of the state following tensions in the aftermath of killing a militant named Mugees Ahmad Mir following a shoot-out that took place in Zakura area of Srinagar district, which had also killed a police officer.
New Delhi accuses Islamabad of supporting and funding the armed groups in Kashmir, claims which Islamabad denies and insists Kashmir people are defending their freedom. (end) atk.hm
