Trump extends nat'l emergency with respect to Iran

WASHINGTON, Nov 6 (KUNA) -- President Donald Trump on Monday extended by a year the national emergency with respect to Iran, that was declared by President Jimmy Carter in 1979 after 52 Americans were held hostage in Tehran.
"Our relations with Iran have not yet normalized, and the process of implementing the agreements with Iran, dated January 19, 1981, is ongoing," said the White House announcement. "For this reason, the national emergency declared on November 14, 1979, and the measures adopted on that date to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond November 14, 2017." The hostages were freed and released by Iran in early 1981 after an agreement was signed by the Carter administration, and the hostages were returned to the US as President Ronald Reagan took office after winning the US election in November 1980.
On November 14, 1979, Carter declared a national emergency with respect to Iran pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act "to deal with the unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy and economy of the United States," the White House announcement noted.
