UN Climate Change Summit kicks off in Bonn
BERLIN, Nov 6 (KUNA) -- The UN Climate Change Conference began in the city of Bonn on Monday.
The summit comes after the international community's ratification of the Paris Convention for Climate Protection, and following the United States' intention to withdraw from the historic agreement.
The implementation of the Paris Climate Convention will be at the heart of the summit in the next two weeks and "we expect the participants to reach consensus under which a very important agreement will be put into effect," said German Environment Minister Barbara Hendricks.
She called on the German parties, which are holding consultations to form the new German government, to focus on the issue of environmental protection and to agree on a government that maintains this issue as a priority stemming from Germany's commitment to its environmental goals.
According to the summit program presented by the German Environment Ministry to journalists, the former capital of Germany will receive about 25,000 participants who will take over for upcoming 12 days the tasks of starting the implementation of the Paris Climate Convention.
The participants will discuss mechanisms for reaching specific benchmarks to control carbon dioxide emissions, as well as the consequences of the United States leaving the important agreement.
The summit will not only involve environmentalists and scientists, but will also include the participation of heads of state and government, notably German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Manuel Macaron, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterich, former US Vice President Al Gore and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.(end).
