France "very concerned" by detention of Turkish activist Kavala

PARIS, Nov 3 (KUNA) -- France expressed serious concern Friday over arresting the Turkish cultural militant Osman Kavala at Istanbul airport two weeks ago, and placing him at detention. According to the French Foreign Ministry, Kavala has close ties with France and other European countries and is seen as an activist "in favor of cultural dialogue and an important figure in Turkey's civil society".
"We are very concerned by the placing in detention of Osman Kavala," the Foreign Ministry said, pointing out that France already questioned his initial arrest, noting that Kavala was a frequent visitor to the French embassy in Ankara and a source of cooperation for regular cultural programs with many European countries.
The French statement added, "We expect Turkey to respect its European and international commitments in matters of human rights and fundamental freedoms," it noted that promoting an active, pluralist cultural life in civil society was one of those rights. Paris urged Turkey to ensure a fair trial for Kavala, who alleged to be involved in anti-State activities. (end) jk.mys
