France stresses need to defend press, fight impunity for violators

PARIS, Nov 2 (KUNA) -- France said on Thursday that the defence of journalists and freedom of speech, in addition to fighting impunity for attacks on the press, are "fundamental principles" of this country's foreign policy and key priorities.
Speaking on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, French Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Agnes Romatet-Espagne stressed that France supported and has initiated action in the UN to protect the press and its professionals.
"Media pluralism, the right to inform or to be informed, notably on the Internet, as well as the ability to express critical views are crucial to democratic debate. Journalists and all media professionals help defend these fundamental liberties," she remarked in a statement.
France also favours the establishment of a special representative to the UN secretary-general for the protection of journalists. (end) jk.hb
