Kuwaiti dignitaries call for promoting voluntary action in Gulf

DOHA, Oct 21 (KUNA) -- A number of Kuwaiti dignitaries working in volunteering have demanded boosting voluntary action in the Gulf region, benefiting from excellent experiences and exchanging expertise among all parties interested in this field as well as disseminating volunteering among all segments of society.
Speaking to KUNA on Saturday on the sidelines of the 4th International Volunteering Youth Forum in Qatar, Dr. Abdullah Al-Failakawi, a lecturer at the Kuwait University, said the voluntary action is one of the most important features of the Kuwaiti society, parents and grandparents throughout history.
He said the UN's honoring of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as a "Humanitarian Leader" is an interpretation of the great status of His Highness the Amir and Kuwait.
Regarding the role of universities in volunteering, Al-Failakawi said that studying at university provides a great opportunity for students to take part in voluntary action, adding that many voluntary initiatives have been launched through universities.
On the forum, he stated Kuwait's participation in the event, through providing a set of lectures and workshops, was distinguished.
He noted that a number of Kuwaiti students made a presentation on their expertise in this domain.
For her part, Al-Anoud Al-Subaihi, head of voluntary action department at the Ministry of State for Youth Affairs, said she and her team is partaking in the forum to present their expertise in this field.
The team aims to raise awareness on humanitarian issues and initiatives through presenting voluntary innovative projects, she said.
She added that the team carried out more than 18 journeys pf psychological support and more than 29 education projects.
Meanwhile, Dr. Ali Dashti, a professor at the Gulf University for Science and Technology, stressed the importance of promoting volunteer action for students as it gives them an opportunity of achievement.
He called for shedding light on the voluntary action carried out by students at universities and exchanging expertise among them as well as benefiting from outstanding experiments.
He pointed out that the university has fulfilled a number of projects and voluntary initiatives, thanks to efforts by students.
"We seek to promote values of voluntary work among students, mainly in the medical, environmental and social fields," he said.
Qatar organized the three-day forum, which featured several voluntary initiatives from Qatar, Kuwait and Oman.
