BRUSSELS, Oct 19 (KUNA) -- European Union leaders began their summit Thursday afternoon with a meeting with European Parliament President Antonio Tajani who in his speech touched upon, among other issues, migration policy and Schengen, digital agenda, security and defence, Brexit, and ties with Iran and Turkey.
"We are faced with uncertainty over the nuclear deal with Iran and must use all our diplomatic energies to ensure that the agreement in its current form is safeguarded" he told the EU leaders.
He said that the European Parliament "is concerned at the recent developments in Turkey, and especially the restrictions on freedom of expression, the treatment of journalists and the human rights situation.
"Turkey is moving further and further away from European values, and hence from accession to the Union." On Brexit, Tajani said he fully agrees with EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier that, "for the moment at least, insufficient progress has been made." During their two-day summit EU leaders will focus on the ongoing efforts as regards migration, defence and adapting to digitalisation, as well as establishing the work programme for the EU summits for months and years to come.
