Trump declared emergency in Louisiana as Nate upgraded to hurricane

WASHINGTON, Oct 7 (KUNA) -- US President Donald Trump declared an "emergency" in Louisiana and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State, tribal, and local response efforts due to emergency conditions resulting from Tropical Storm Nate, the White House announced Saturday.
It said in a statement that Trump's action authorizes the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) "to coordinate all disaster relief efforts," to "help alleviate the hardship and suffering that the emergency may inflict on the local population, and provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures." Nate has been upgraded to a Category I hurricane with estimated maximum winds of 75 miles per hour.
Nate is expected to make landfall later tonight as a Category II storm at the US Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Alabama-Florida border, including New Orleans, according to forecasts. (end) si.bs
