IRBIL, Sept 30 (KUNA) -- Kurdistan region's government called on its Baghdad counterpart Saturday to end the decision to suspend flights and close airports in the Kurdistan region.
The Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) spokesperson Safin Dizi said, in a statement, that the decision was unfair for the region, saying it was against international laws and norms.
The closure of airports in Kurdistan violated the rights of those who are need of medical attention from the civilian population and also the injured Peshmerga forces who are fighting so-called Islamic State (IS), said Dizi, noting that some cases needed treatment abroad; however, the decision to suspend flights was in the way.
The authorities in Kurdistan had requested to hold meetings on the matter with counterparts in the federal government, affirmed Dizi who indicated that the Kurdish people were the first to fend off attacks by IS and they were the ones who welcomed displaced Iraqis warmly.
The spokesperson expressed disappointed with the current status quo, hoping that matters would be resolved soon.
Baghdad began to suspended flights to the airports in Kurdistan and managed to take control of the land border points leading to the region. Iraq said that the procedure was constitutional and it was meant to protect the rights of all Iraqis including the Kurds. (end) sbr.gta
