Abul-Gheit in Iraq in bid to settle referendum issue

BAGHDAD, Sept 9 (KUNA) -- Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Abul-Gheit arrived in the Iraqi capital on Saturday on a mission aimed at settling the issue of the Kurds' independence referendum.
A foreign ministry source told KUNA that the Arab League chief would meet Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi and other officials before proceeding to Irbil for an encounter with Masud Barzani, President of Iraq's Kurdistan.
The source confirmed that he would try to reach a settlement among the Iraqis over the public referendum due in the Kurdish region on September 25.
The Iraqi Kurds have declared the planned voting to separate from Baghdad and establish an independent Kurdish entity. (end) ahh.rk
