Rain related incidents kill 23 people in S. Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 1 (KUNA) -- At least 23 people including seven children were killed in rain related incidents in Pakistan's southern Karachi city after the city received heavy rainfall, said reports on Friday.
The storm drain of Gujjar nullah started overflowing after the Lyari River in Karachi got filled to capacity. The heavy rain fall that struck the city on Thursday killed at least 23 people where most of the victims died from electrocution, according to the reports.
Two people died when the roof or wall of some decrepit buildings collapsed and two others drowned in different parts of the city.
A one-year-old boy was killed in North Karachi, a two-year-old girl in Afridi Colony area, two men from Shershah colony, two people in Machar Colony, a man and a woman in Neelum Colony, a boy and a man in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, two youngsters from People's Chowrangi, four men from Punjab Colony and Gulshan-i-Maymar area, three people in Gabol Town and Chishti Nagar area died from electrocution.
Pakistan military troops have begun the operations to clear the roads and ensure uninterrupted communication and connectivity within the city as well as with other parts of Pakistan. Some 80 of K-Electric's 1,600 feeders tripped due to the rain but most feeders were turned on hours after the rain.
Meanwhile, the rain disrupted the flight operations with several flights delayed, diverted or cancelled due to heavy rainfall.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahid Khaqan Abbasi directed the Pakistan Army and other authorities to mobilize all their resources to clear the roads and ensure uninterrupted communication and connectivity within the city as well as with other parts of Pakistan. (end) sbk.mt
