11 killed, hundreds of thousands affected in China by Typhoon

TOKYO, Aug 25 (KUNA) -- Typhoon Hato has left 11 people dead, one missing, and affected some 741,000 residents in China, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Friday, citing the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Hato also caused 6,600 homes to collapse and damaged 68,000 hectares of crops, resulting in the direct economic losses of CNY 12.2 billion (USD 1.8 billion).
Nine people were killed in south China's Guangdong Province, where the typhoon made landfall on Wednesday, according to the provincial civil affairs department.
Hato was the 13th typhoon to hit China this year. It moved west while losing strength after making landfall in Guangdong.
In addition, eight people were confirmed dead and 200 others injured when typhoon Hato struck neighboring Macau on Wednesday. (end) mk.sd
