57% increase in Pakistan's population

ISLAMABAD, Aug 25 (KUNA) -- Pakistan's population has increased to 207.8 million with an increase of 75.4 million people in last 19 years, provisional census data presented to the Council of Common Interest (CCI) on Friday show.
According to provisional summary results of the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017, Pakistan has experienced a 57 per cent increase since the last census in 1998.
The data shows that 30.5 million people reside in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, five million in Federally Administered Tribal Areas, 47.9 million in southern Sindh, 12.3 million in southwestern Balochistan, two million in federal capital Islamabad, while eastern Punjab, the largest province in terms of population, houses 110 million people.
The sixth population census carried out by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) observed an increase in the urban-rural ratio in all administrative units except Islamabad, which nonetheless remains the second most urbanized unit of the country.
Balochistan, the least urbanized of Pakistan's provinces, has experienced the fastest average annual growth rate since 1998 of 3.37 percent.
The statistics reveal that women share in the total population was reduced with female population standing at 101.314 million, which was 48.8 percent of the total headcount.
The male population increased to 106.449 million or 51.2 percent. Meanwhile, there were only 10,418 transgender persons or 0.05 percent.
The PBS had conducted the exercise in two phases across Pakistan under the supervision of the military.
The population results will be used to determine federating units' share in federal resources, allocations and delimitation of National Assembly and provincial assemblies' seats and determination of provincial job quotas. (end) sbk.rk
