US top priority is to neutralize Afghan terrorist havens - WH

WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (KUNA) -- The top priority of the Trump administration in its Afghanistan policy is ensuring that Americans are protected and "Afghanistan is never able to be used as a haven to attack the United States," White House press secretary said. "The ultimate goal is a peaceful settlement between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban that protects our interest and protects American lives," Sarah Sanders said at a press briefing on Thursday.
The policy utilizes "all of our American power -- diplomatic, economic and military -- in a way that's sustainable and cost-effective. It is important that there's a regional approach, and part of that is developing and strengthening the relationship and partnership with India." Sanders went on.
Asked if it was the administration's strategy to pursue and eliminate all terrorist cells in Afghanistan and Pakistan for an honorable victory to be achieved, Sanders said the question should be directed to Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.
India has been making important contributions toward Afghanistan's democracy and stability, "and we think it's important to continue that effort," she said. (end) rm.gb
