Council of Europe Assembly condemns Spanish attacks

PARIS, July 18 (KUNA) -- The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Friday condemned the terrorist attacks in Spain a day earlier in which 14 died and over 100 were wounded.
In a statement, the Strasbourg-based PACE said the attacks will only bolster the determination of member countries to defend democracy.
"We mourn the terrible loss of life and deplore this senseless violence," the statement said.
"The thoughts of all of us at the Assembly are with those so tragically affected. We are also relieved that further loss of life was avoided during the second incident in Cambrils." Spanish police managed to thwart the efforts of a number of terrorists to carry out a Barcelona-style attack with a vehicle, but several people were nonetheless injured.
Five terrorists were shot dead by police in Cambrils, a coastal resort town south of Barcelona.
The Council of Europe body said that the terror attacks "will only strengthen our determination to defend democracy and uphold civilised values." PACE has 47 member-states as part of its assembly and it monitors human rights and democracy in its membership. (end) jk.sd
